rainbow denim, two ways

Hi friends! It’s been a minute. I’m so happy to join the Measure Fabrics maker team! Maria sent me this beautiful light-to-medium-weight rainbow denim and I was able to make two garments from it – a dress and a jacket. I really wanted to show off the beautiful billowy drape of the fabric and I think the two patterns I chose were perfect for this. I love the yarn-dyed fabric, so I know the color will stand years of washing and wear.

The fabric came well-packaged as shown in the first photo! I generally try to wash and dry most fabrics, and after drying, there was minimal shrinking and very little wrinkle even though I left the fabric in my dryer for a while. On deciding what patterns to use, I knew I wanted to make some sort of coat/jacket – I thought about the Sapporo Coat, which I’ve made once before, but I don’t get much use out of longer coats in Houston. I found the Paola Workwear Jacket from the Fabrics Store, which is a free pattern!! Huge plus.

The pattern took one evening to make, and the fabric made the job so much easier. I loved working with it, and it honestly feels like such a luxurious fabric. I loved the detail of the flat-felled seams, despite the extra steps it took. I’ll probably end up wearing this jacket over leggings or jeans and a basic tee to wear for casual picnics, walks, or trips to the grocery store. The pattern itself was super straightforward and I made zero adjustments, and would definitely recommend the pattern as well!

I had a decent amount of fabric left after making the jacket that it was the perfect length for a simple dress! I contemplated between making the Wiksten Shift dress and the Tilly and the Buttons Stevie Dress, which are two similar silhouettes. I already owned the Stevie Dress pattern, so instead of fussing with printing out a PDF, it was nice to work with a pattern I was already familiar with. I actually ended up also flat-felling the seams on the dress too, which makes the dress feel more put together.

I definitely seeing myself wearing this dress with tights and a denim jacket in the winter and with sandals in the summer/spring, and I’m quite pleased with the finished products! I styled the dress with leather mules from Madewell in the photos here.

This is my first time working with fabric from Measure Fabric and my expectations have definitely been surpassed! Unfortunately this specific fabric is already sold out, but I’ll be on the look out for more awesome fabrics coming soon! Congrats to Maria on the relaunch of her site, be sure to check it out 🙂

Happy Crafting!

Danica
