reaching milestones + revisiting the Indigo smock dress

Hello everyone!

I’m writing today because I wanted to commemorate a milestone that I’m rather proud of – reaching 5,000 followers on Instagram! I definitely did not previously imagine this happening when I first started this blog and instagram account, but it’s definitely a huge motivator and affirmation that I am, in fact, reaching people through sharing my creativity and passion!

I started this blog in November of 2018, during my final year of medical school, as a creative outlet for a bunch of extra time that I found. I had spent the previous year quietly browsing blogs and instagram accounts for inspiration for sewing, a hobby that I had just embarked on. My boyfriend pushed me to start the account as a way for me to share my projects, and here we are – May 2020 with 5000 people on one form of social media. It’s totally surreal.

Anyways, I thought I would take this time to make a pretty dress and take pretty pictures, but in a special way by heading to my favorite local park to get some photos.

I purchased this cotton sateen from A. Boeken Stoeffen in Amsterdam in Spring 2019 on a trip with my mom! I was determined to find fabric at a local shop, and my mom talked me into purchasing tulip fabric. As a florals addict, I fell in love with this bright yellow tulip print. However, for a year, it sat in my fabric stash – untouched – because I was too afraid to cut into it!

This milestone was just the push I needed to cut into it, but the next decision was picking a pattern! I wanted to pick a very wearable pattern, one that I would definitely want to wear to brunch and other dressy-casual events. I also wanted one with enough detail, but not so much that it didn’t show off the large tulip print. So, the obvious choice was the Indigo smock dress from Tilly and the Buttons. This is now my 4th version, and definitely my favorite!! It turned out perfectly, and I’m so so glad I chose to do the exposed ruffled hem. Using luxe fabric is such a treat to work with and even made the process of sewing the dress somewhat of a celebration.

Anyways, here’s a bunch of pictures of me in a dress! Big thanks to my boyfriend who is always willing to take photos of me – you’re the best, Will! And to my mom for being a behind-the-scenes creative director of my blog by always providing her opinions. And thanks to all of you guys, if you’re reading this!! Leave a comment, introduce yourself, whether here or on the ‘gram!

Thanks for everything, y’all!

Danica
